This is a small item, measuring about 9" high by 5" deep by 1" high, which makes it fairly portable. It basically wedges beneath the back of your notebook and inclines it, which is apparently a feature. The fan sucks in air from the top and blows it underneath your laptop. In theory, two small rubber feet on the top of the prevent your computer from sliding off. If your hand is resting next to the computer you will feel a small breeze. The noise is noticeable but in the background - if you are someone looking for an absolutely silent cooler this one is not for you, but I would not rate it as being distracting.
The item scores low on construction quality. I started using this item two days ago and both of the rubber feet are sliding out of their positions. Perhaps using Velcro would create a satisfying grip, but should you really have to?
Design - adjusting the position of the laptop also moves it off of the cooler which means you have to place it back on. Due to the design of the fan and the direction of airflow, this is not a cooler that you can use directly on your lap - you'll need a surface to put it on in order for the laptop to be properly positioned for cooling.
Verdict - For a few bucks more you can purchase the Vantec Lapcool 3 which is marginally less portable but more durable, stable, and can be used on your lap. The only thing with that is that the top plastic will flex if the laptop is improperly positioned, hitting the fan and creating an irritating noise. I'm going to return this item in exchange for that one.
